Dear UDN readers,
It is about time we let you know Uruguay Daily News it's meeting it's end. More specifically, this is our last week, meaning Friday July 30th is UDN's last day. We must say we are proud of the work done and we hope it's been of use beyond our knowledge. But it's time to turn the lights out.
It's been almost four years of commited impartial and serious journalism that this non-profitable society has dedicated to provide daily updated news from our country. Four years of filling the gap of information and more importantly translated information about Uruguay and it's ways and needs. Of shortening the breach between Uruguay and the anglophone community worldwide.
During this last year we've faced closure many times as resources to maintain this proyect going were simply running short. We dedicated much time and effort to promote the UDN proyect among those intitutions (no, we're not giving away names) who mostly benefit from the presence of this (you) our public. But we've failed to raise their interest. Were we went wrong?: we simply don't know.
We'd like to cite a study conducted by the consulting firm Oikos for OPP (Office of Planning and Assessment) regarding the perception of investing in Uruguay: The consultant stated that “an ignorance of the roles of the various organizations” exists, and that most of the government information related to investment agencies is concentrated in the Minister of Economy. In as much, offices dedicated to the promotion of tourism, forestry, software, free trade zone, and the ports are obscure. Along those lines, Oikos recommended that a new organization dedicated exclusively to these matters be created. They also recommended that more publicitary emphasis be placed on the instruments of investment.
Well, this particular space for advertising our country's investment opportunities is certainly going out no pain no glory. The only source of updated translated information regarding all aspects of Uruguayan society. A news site with over 15,000 monthly prints and a specific audience. The first link on google's search for "Uruguay news". This proyect is simply tired of being overlooked and it's incapable to continue on it's own. As we Uruguayans like to say: "cuestiones del fóbal" (football issues = things that happen)
We recommend you continue to follow our news feed sites; www.espectador.com, www.180.com.uy, www.elpais.com.uy and www.observa.com.uy in their translated versions. And continue betting on this beautiful, complex, strong-willed country.
Sincerely yours,
UDN's team

The MSP (Ministry of Public Health) will hold a meeting this afternoon to discuss the statement by former President Tabaré Vázquez regarding the current regime’s plans to loosen some of the tobacco controls.
Vázquez said that Uruguay cannot take a step backwards in the fight against tobacco usage, and voiced his opposition to the initiative by Frente Amplio Executive Jorge Brovetto. Vázquez warned that he will not support any of the measures that current President José Mujica is sponsoring related to loosening tobacco control.
The government wants to avoid a negative court judgment initiated in February by Phillip Morris, where they want to market several different tobacco products under the same brand name. The other point of contention is the upcoming plan to reduce the maximum permissible percentage of advertising on cigarette cartons from 80% to 65%.
