According to data released by the Consulate, 27 deportations occurred during 2009, compared to 20 YTD for 2010.
The Uruguayan Immigration Department disclosed that through May of this year, 37 Uruguayans have been deported from the US, compared with 226 for all of 2009. They said that last year 306 Uruguayans were deported by 14 different countries, and that the number YTD compared with the same period last year is higher. He explained that in the past few weeks increased vigilance by Barack Obama’s government has led to more detentions.
In New York, for example, illegal immigrants are detected during traffic accidents and if they commit a crime, but in addition the police force is conducting raids on bus stations. The majority of the cases reported from New York were due to expired visas, and as a consequence, they had to leave the country.
