Streets Flooded and Cars Floating

Tuesday, 23 February 2010 08:34

Yesterday afternoon, about 19:30 hours there were heavy rains in Montevideo but for now the National Directorate of Meteorology does not have a measure of how much it rained. However, the rains were enough to cause damage in various parts of the capital and as confirmed by the Central Bureau of Fire Operations streets are cut into different parts of the city and even cars are floating for accumulations of water. Car collided with each other by the force of water, trash containers washed away, homes and businesses flooded and power outages in Pocitos and Punta Carretas were some of the consequences of yesterday's downpour.
Around 10pm, on Monday, the Departmental Emergency Coordination Center in Montevideo reported that nine people had been evacuated. Moreover, the Center explained that since the afternoon of Monday they are working on storm drains that collapsed, "almost all", and that the work will continue on Tuesday. The coordinator of Emergency Departmental Committee, Daniel Soria, said they are evaluating potential damage and victims in the city.
"It lasted about 40 minutes. Storm system is being restored to its normal causes, it is again stabilized. Beyond some houses in which water has entered, nothing else has happened. Yes, we are following up on the Lower Valencia, in the Community Center No. 17 because we had heard that the creek at that place was overflowing as in the rest of Montevideo and there are people in that community center who are evaluating the situation in the area and we all soon know whether to evacuate people from the settlement boundary to the creek, "he said.
In the “Ciudad de la Costa” report says several pines and ceilings fell and were blown up as a result of the storm. Where rained more in Canelones, was in Progreso and Las Piedras, where water entered some homes in the lowlands but it was not necessary to evacuate. In Santa Lucia it was expected that the river would cut the bridge on Route 11 during the morning because the Santa Lucia river flow was increasing.
The situation complicates more the departments that were recovering from recent floods. According to the National Emergency System, the total amount of people evacuated is 1,600, being the most affected departments Durazno, with 700 people from their homes, Soriano, where the capital, Mercedes, has 816 evacuees, and the Department of Tacuarembó with 84 people in that situation.
