Monday, 23 November 2009 00:00

After thirty eight years from the fire that burned it down, the Sodre Auditorium was now reopened. There is now a place for the symphony orchestra, the choir, ballet, and chamber music. President Tabaré Vázquez, who was at the inauguration, said that this reopening was possible due the the hard work of several governments.

The building has an area of 25,000 m2 with a main hall of 2,000 seats, mainly designed for opera shows, symphony and ballet. The stage, which is the largest one of the country, is twenty seven meters high. The auditorium has a second room, smaller, designed for chamber music and experimental repertoire. There are also workshops and rehearsal rooms. The auditorium also has an amphitheater, exhibition areas, sectors of "foyers”, and cafes.
