Underground tunnel to the beach

Friday, 10 July 2009 00:00

An underground tunnel has been under construction for the last month. It has been designed for public use and is located between the 42nd and 43rd markers in Maldonado.

The aim is for the underpass to be used by pedestrians to access the beach in the summertime without the need to cross the Interbalnearia thus avoiding peak season traffic.

Julio Riella General Director of Urban Planning and Land Management of Maldonado, told 180 that the project was proposed by Veramansa complex, which is building 16 towers in the area, "and was supervised by the office’s technical team." The tunnel will be for public use. Nearly 5,000 people will benefit from the tunnel during the season. During the wintertime, the tunnel will remain closed.
