Future Government Intends to Remove U.S. Military Attaches

Wednesday, 10 February 2010 07:13

The future president, Jose Mujica, will face the budget constraint with alternative funding mechanisms and cutting spending in some areas. One case is the Ministry of Defense, where Luis Rosadilla will remove U.S. military attaches which currently have a very high cost. Mujica said the decision "does not only imply spend less but also leverages resources in the field."
To give a clear signal in that issue, the Foreign Ministry will evaluate all foreign missions and close those that have not had good results from the standpoint of political or commercial.
The appointed Transport Minister Enrique Pintado, told 180 that the order is facing "a new era of progressive government, where a central point was the economic and social development of Uruguay." He said that "measures within a framework of fiscal prudence will be taken" to be very "rigorous in the care of numbers and fiscal accounts" because in the first two years of Mujica there are "foreign commitments" that "undertakes to take precautions."
The future Cabinet would meet again on February 23rd to begin to discuss further the issues raised in headlines in the first meeting on Monday. The advice of ministers takes place every 15 days and will try to address a specific topic during the meeting. After each council, a spokesman gives details of what happened.
