Mujica President-Elect

Monday, 30 November 2009 21:56

José Mujica and Danilo Astori, Frente Amplio (FA) candidates, were elected president and vice president of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay.

After finding out the outcome, the winning formula took the stand at the NH Columbia hotel assembled to say their words to the thousands of Frente Amplio activists who had crowded into the Rambla.

Astori was the first to speak and promised the Uruguayan people not to disappoint them. He also thanked them for their votes and support, and asked the people to stay by their side and help them governing the country.

Then, Astori invited Mujica to speak, now not as Uruguay’s future president anymore but as Uruguayans president-elect. By that time Mujica’s eyes welled with tears.

Mujica gave a conciliatory speech, apologized for some grievances expressed to the opposition during the campaign, and said he will lay to dialogue and negotiation because "winning by a few more votes doesn’t make me better than anyone”.

Mujica said: "Also remember, in a night of joy, that there are some people with sadness and that they are compatriots, our blood brothers, so neither victors nor vanquished. We just choose a government which does not own the truth, which needs us all. And my appreciation goes to the men who represented Partido Nacional (PN), Partido Colorado (PC), Partido Independiente (PI), all fellow citizens."

"If you have joy, let’s not make the mistake of offending those who chose another option. Tomorrow the country and the commitment will continue. An old fighter who needs you asks you for your support”.

"My gratitude and appreciation goes to Partido Nacional followers. My appreciation to Partido Colorado representative, Dr. Bordaberry, and my thanks to Partido Independiente. We will be trying to accomplish everything we can in the sense of unity for the future", added Mujica.

He referred to Vazquez government as the best advertising agency that the FA campaign had.

Regarding supporters who, despite the wind and rain, gathered at the Rambla, he said: "Comrades, you know what?, This is the world upside down. The world is upside down because you are the ones who should be here, on stage, getting our clap, because you fought, kept fighting and won this battle. All this is transient, you are permanent. Be anonymous, omnipotent. There are those who believe that power is high and do not realize that power is in the heart of the masses. Thanks, it took me a lifetime to learn that", said Mujica.

Mujica ended by saying that they may be wrong but will never turn their backs to problems.
