Hillary Clinton Arrives On Monday in a Strategic Tour

Wednesday, 24 February 2010 08:35

Hillary will arrive to Montevideo on Monday morning, and after the inauguration of President Tabaré Vázquez to Mujica she will travel to Brasilia for a meeting with Foreign Minister Celso Amorim. Until last night the State Department had not formalized the tour, and only confirmed that Hillary was preparing a trip to the region. "I suspect they will announce it tomorrow (Wednesday)”, said yesterday the State Department spokesman, Philip Crowley.
The confirmation that Hillary Clinton will come to Montevideo on Monday 1st for the inauguration of President-elect Jose Mujica, mobilized diplomats from Argentina and Chile seeking realize a bilateral meeting of their presidents with Secretary of State. Hillary was expected in Argentina to that country included in the tour. When left out of the tour, Cristina Fernandez is trying a bilateral meeting with Hillary in Montevideo.
Diplomatic sources said Bachelet also could have a meeting with Secretary of State. They explained that Hillary was scheduled to attend the inauguration of Sebastián Piñera on March 11th in Santiago, but the date is very close to this tour and the elected president of Chile will be in Montevideo on Monday, she would make a place in her agenda to meet him together with Bachelet.
The relations of Argentina and Chile with the U.S. are quite different. While Argentina has had several diplomatic clashes, many years Chile has FTAs with the power of the North and is on the list of countries allied with Washington in the region.
President Cristina Fernandez has sought an interview with Obama, without success so far. Both coincide in April in Washington for a summit on nuclear safety, but still nothing was said about a meeting in the Oval Office at the White House.
