Digital TV: European Standard "Restricts the Freedom of Citizens"

Wednesday, 07 April 2010 09:46

The founder of the Free Software Movement, Richard Stallman, American, said that Uruguay should reject the European standard for digital television because it was designed "to restrict the freedom of citizens." Stallman, who is visiting Uruguay, said that European states betrayed their citizens depriving their liberty.
"It's an immediate issue in Uruguay, the question of the standard for digital TV," Stallman said that "states of Europe have been sold to companies: working for companies to restrict its citizens, is a form of treason."
An advocate of the Japanese standard, Stallman said the European standard may limit some of the activities you can do to this day with analogue television. "There are several possible activities to do with a television broadcast, which are not possible with a digital-television standard that is able to ban, ie, every TV is built and manufactured with the functionality of various things as banning orders expressed in the same issue. The issue may have a sign saying that you can not be recorded, he said. "It is denying the user a capability that already has: it is a rule that attacks the citizens."
