Another Riot at Colonia Berro Youth Detention Facility

Monday, 15 June 2009 00:00

Several inmates at Colonia Berro’s Hogar Piedras rioted and took three employees as hostages. The riot began after visiting hours when the youths took the hostages.

Later, the hostages were released. Some family members stayed inside to support the minors. According to some family members, the inmates rioted because they had not received food for several days. Authorities deny this and say they do not know why the youths rioted.

At around 8pm, representatives of the INAU board arrived with riot police and the minors returned to their cells and family members left the facility.
