“Spanish businessperson Pedro Saenz de Zumarán started the initiative of building a new market, which was completed on 19 July 1885 at a cost of UYP 309,000. 3,500 square meters of land was acquired that at the time was known as “Baño de los Padres.”*
For the tourist that arrives in Montevideo, Mercado del Puerto (Port Market) is a must, whether for its traditional gastronomy or just because the tour bus stops there.
Mercado del Puerto is not just a big food court with restaurants that only serve beef. Although this is not far from the truth, the thing that is most attractive of the market lies deeper.
Mercado del Puerto has 130 years of history (almost as long as the history of Uruguay). The worker, musician, businessperson, fisherman, the president - everyone feels at home there. A unique place exists behind the large doors that calls people in.
The market has its own life. People who go there only visit, but each new visitor enjoys an atmosphere that was created before they were born.
There are some that have lived an eternity under its roof. The talented “viejo guitarrero” (the old guitarist) plays folk music that has lasted for centuries for a few coins.
If you go to the Mercado, you will see the guitarrero, bent over, trying to play his instrument with the force he has left. He has never left the Mercado, or so they say. Those who have be able to escape always go back. Mercado del Puerto: a place to return.
*Note: expect to be showered with cheap sparkling wine if you go during midday during the Christmas holiday season.
