Carrasco

The most well known and exclusive neighborhood of Montevideo got its name from one of the first inhabitants of the city: Salvador Sebastián Carrasco. Carrasco was born in Buenos Aires and was the great uncle of José Gervasio Artigas.

The lands in the area changed hands throughout the 19th century. In 1907, Dr. Alfredo Arocena acquired part of these lands and the neighborhood began to take shape, first as a beach town. Inspired by the Ostende beach town in Argentina (a project by two Belgian architects who wanted to create a twin of a city in their home country), in 1912 Arocena created the Carrasco Corporation to construct the famous Carrasco Gates and to sell the first lots.

The area was characterized by dunes and wetlands that was only accessible by a poor road. In the early days, no one lived their in winter, but Carrasco would soon become one of the most famous beach areas in South America. Soon thereafter, people began to choose Carrasco for their year-round residences. By 1917, some visitors began to build the first houses, some of which still exist today.

The Carrasco Casino Hotel, completed in 1921, gave personality and status to one of the city’s most attractive areas. After nearly 100 years, Carrasco has maintained its beauty.
